If you are trying to create the system state of a Windows 2008 Server operating system, verify that the Windows Server Backup (WSB) is installed, and that there is enough free disk space on the protected server to store the system state. (ID 30214 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FB)

when going to the server that needs to backed up we have the following messages in the application eventlog:

Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.

systemwriter not found? huh ?

lets do a vssadmin list writers then and indeed there is no system writer.

which points to permission issues:

i ran the script in the post and my system writer returned.

Focus of the day is off course SQL Server.
Last year, SQL Server Day 2008 was the biggest community driven SQL Server event in the Benelux, with more than 200 attendees.

The event will kick-off with an international speaker positioning the SQL Server data platform, today and tomorrow.

We have 6 break-out sessions with technical content on SQL Server. The speakers are recognized international SQL Server experts; including Dirk Gubbels, Chris Webb, Henk van der Valk, ...
During the lunch break our gold partners will present their solutions and offerings in the lightning sessions .

We conclude the day with a closing keynote on Gemini, the new breakthrough Self-Service Business Intelligence (BI) capabilities being delivered in SQL Server 2008 R2.

Full details and registration are available on www.sqlserverday.be
//Bart

Hyper-V microsoft virtual bios: failed to resume

While performing some maintaince on a hyperV host i encountered the following error “microsoft virtual bios: failed to resume” when starting a guest. After this error the guest disappeared from the hyperV gui.

After some troubleshooting (recreating the configuration manually) i noticed that the vmc configuration xml file always gets hosed up (tags in wrong places). bizarro…

then i saw the little trendmicro icon @ the bottom and I disabled the trendmicro services. After this I was able to start guests and edit guests again.

A great sigh of relief later I found this support article : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;961804

“ Creating or starting a Hyper-V virtual machine on Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 may fail with error: 0x800704C8 “

You may experience one of the following issues on a Windows Server 2008 system with the Hyper-V role installed or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008:
· When you attempt to create or start a virtual machine, you receive one of the following errors:
· The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8)
· ‘VMName’ Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port (Instance ID {7E0DA81A-A7B4-4DFD-869F-37002C36D816}): Failed to Power On with Error 'The specified network resource or device is no longer available.' (0x80070037).
· The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. Later we will discuss how the optimizer works, why it can be wrong (statistics, procedure cache) and how to correct this. Another part of the session will be some advanced features of indexing like partitioning, locking and filtered indexes. We will of course not forget indexed views and computed column indexes. If there is some time left we can also look at spatial indexes and xml indexes

Marc Mertens is trainer at Global Knowledge .

Agenda:
18:00 - 18:30 Registration and welcome with a drink & sandwich
18:30 - 20:00 Part 1 of the session
20:00 - 20:30 pause
20:30 - 22:00 Part 2 of the session
22:00 - ... the task of migrating file services. It provides the necessary tools to
help minimize the impact to users, resulting in a more manageable
environment.

Simplify the task of moving data: FSMT
helps the system administrator easily migrate and consolidate shared
folders from servers running Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 family
of servers, Windows 2003 family of servers, Windows Server 2008, or
Windows Storage Server 2008 to a server running Windows Server 2003,
Windows Storage Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008.

Minimize the impact on users:
FSMT helps the system administrator configure new functionality in
Distributed File System (DFS) to maintain the original Universal Naming
Convention (UNC) path of files after they are moved to a new server
through DFS consolidation roots. This reduces the impact of file server
consolidation and migration, saves end users time spent searching for
files, and ensures that line-of-business applications keep running.

More manageable and productive:
FSMT is the tool that allows administrators to overcome data migration
hurdles. While the benefits of consolidation or migration to a platform
with better file services is the payoff, getting there can sometimes be
overwhelming. By simplifying the task of moving data and keeping the
impact on users to a minimum, the company is able to increase its
overall ability to manage their file services. This creates a more
productive environment both for users and those in charge of planning.

all about FSMT : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/fsmt.aspx

With this version you will be able to migrate and consolidate shared
folders from servers running Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 family
of servers, Windows 2003 family of servers, Windows Server 2008, or
Windows Storage Server 2008 to a server running Windows Server 2003,
Windows Storage Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Storage
Server 2008.

This new version comes with support added to Windows Server 2003 as
well as Windows Server 2008, both on x86 and x64 systems, and its
available in 5 languages (English, French, German, Japanese and
Spanish).

FSMT 1.1 can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center site.
