SQLUG session : SQL Server Service Broker and some of the things it can do for you : Feb 11th

The topic of the evening is SQL Server Service Broker and some of the things it can do for you.
The session will cover the terminology and features of this framework, as well as discuss some of the scenarios in which it can be used, to round off we will be implementing a small service broker application.

The session speaker is Dr Nico Jacobs, who was a researcher at the Computer Science department, KULeuven for seven years, where he obtained his PhD in machine learning (data mining). Since 2004, he is trainer and consultant at U2U, where he focuses primarily on SQL Server and the Business Intelligence back-end.

DPM 2007 message:

DPM failed to create the system state backup. If you are trying to create the system state of a Windows 2008 Server operating system, verify that the Windows Server Backup (WSB) is installed, and that there is enough free disk space on the protected server to store the system state. when going to the server that needs to backed up we have the following messages in the application eventlog:

lets do a vssadmin list writers then and indeed there is no system writer.

SQL Server Day 2009 – December 3

On Thursday, the 3rd of December 2009 SQLUG.BE (The Belgian SQL Server User Group) and Microsoft are teaming up to organize the second Belgian SQL Server Day.

Focus of the day is off course SQL Server.
Last year, SQL Server Day 2008 was the biggest community driven SQL Server event in the Benelux, with more than 200 attendees.

Hyper-V microsoft virtual bios: failed to resume

While performing some maintaince on a hyperV host i encountered the following error “microsoft virtual bios: failed to resume” when starting a guest. After this error the guest disappeared from the hyperV gui.

After some troubleshooting (recreating the configuration manually) i noticed that the vmc configuration xml file always gets hosed up (tags in wrong places). bizarro…

then i saw the little trendmicro icon @ the bottom and I disabled the trendmicro services. After this I was able to start guests and edit guests again.

“ Creating or starting a Hyper-V virtual machine on Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 may fail with error: 0x800704C8 “

You may experience one of the following issues on a Windows Server 2008 system with the Hyper-V role installed or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008:
·         When you attempt to create or start a virtual machine, you receive one of the following errors:
·         The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8)
·         ‘VMName’ Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port (Instance ID {7E0DA81A-A7B4-4DFD-869F-37002C36D816}): Failed to Power On with Error 'The specified network resource or device is no longer available.' (0x80070037).
·         The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. (0x800703E3)
·         Virtual machines disappear from the Hyper-V Management Console

This issue can be caused by antivirus software that is installed in the parent partition and the real-time scanning component is configured to monitor the Hyper-V virtual machine files.

So then i configured the trend micro agents to exclude the necessary folders. Should have known this one in advance :-) …….

This UG-evening will start with an introduction of the basics of index design (the heap,clustered/non clustered indexes and covering of a query by an index). Later we will discuss how the optimizer works, why it can be wrong (statistics, procedure cache) and how to correct this. Another part of the session will be some advanced features of indexing like partitioning, locking and filtered indexes. We will of course not forget indexed views and computed column indexes. If there is some time left we can also look at spatial indexes and xml indexes
